Shama is driven by a desire to see the local community where she lives and works achieve social and economic empowerment through the conservation of their natural, architectural and cultural heritage. By doing so, she hopes to secure the future of the site through its sustainable integration with the people of the land.

In the 13+ years since Shama has worked in Anegundi, she has succeeded in setting up an NGO – the Kishkinda Trust, and via this has run programs integrating heritage conservation with Crafts, Rural Tourism, Organic Farming and other locally developed skills that benefit the community socially and financially.
